Description of the area where organization works:

ASODECC is based in the community of Carbón 2 in Cahuita, in the Talamanca region of Costa Rica. Within the country and internationally, Talamanca is considered an important area for its biological wealth and cultural diversity.

Talamanca includes the protection of two national parks, Amistad International Park – Caribbean and Cahuita National Park, and the conservation units of Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve, Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, and three indigenous territories – Kekoldi, Bri Bri, and Cabecar. Talamanca possesses one of the highest rates of endemism in Costa Rica with approximately 185 species of mammals, 141 of reptiles, 361 of birds, 60 of fish, and more than 3 000 species of plants. The watersheds of the Sixaola, La Estrella, Carbon, and Gandoca Rivers are also found in this region.

This culturally diverse area is home to the Bri Bri and Cabecar indigenous groups, afro-Caribbeans, mestizos, Europeans, Nicaraguans, and North Americans.

Situated in the buffer zone of Cahuita National Park, Carbón 2 forms a link to the Bri Bri indigenous territory. The area offers the visitor magnificent scenery, spots for birdwatching and viewing the flora and fauna, and provides an opportunity to mingle with local residents.
