The Value of Restored Riparian Habitat to Overwintering Neotropical Migratory Birds

This project is studying birds using well-conserved and restored riparian plots in six watersheds in California and Mexico during the non-breeding season. The project has focused on widely distributed species of warblers, kinglets, sparrows, and other upland birds that rely on riparian habitats in the winter.

Waste management

Weaving for Nature

The presence of plastic bags suffocating coral has been documented in the Costa Rican Caribbean; in other cases they are consumed by wildlife, which can result in death. The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) confuses the bags with jellyfish, making a mistake that can be fatal. This project aims to convert these used bags into plastic thread that local women can weave into washable, artistic bags.
