Project Name : Strengthening Local Organizations in the Miskitas and Tawahkas Indigenous Communities

Synopsis: The Development Agency of Mosquitia (MOPAWI) provides technical support to cacao farmers to promote forest conservation and helps to strengthen local organizations in the ten Miskitas and Tawahkas indigenous communities in Wampusirpe, Honduras.
Annual budget & donors: $12,000 from the TEAR Fund, Netherlands.
Principal accomplishments: Carried out a census of cacao producers and grassroots organizations; provided technical support to farmers and grassroots organizations; prepared training documents; created and launched a fund to support community micro-projects that are socially, environmentally, and economically viable. This initiative will strengthen grassroots organizations' strategic alliances with the municipal government and other key stakeholders.
Anticipated Accomplishments: Among the project's goals for the next year are to increase incomes of local families by improving farming techniques, reduce deforestation, and improve social and environmental conditions in the participating communities.
